The first T120 Bonneville 650cc model was released to an eager motorcycling public and dealers at the Earls Court Show in 1958. Triumphs most popular model went through a range of upgrades and enhancements, with the last 650s being released by the Meridan Workers Co-Operative in 1974, sporting disc brake front ends. The T140 was first released in 1973, and after the sit in, stayed in production till 1983, when the factory closed. Les Harris made the Bonneville 750 under license from 1985 to 1988.

The Bonneville takes its name from the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah USA, where Johnny Allen broke the world land speed record in 1956 in a 650cc Triumph  powered streamliner, raising the record to 214.4 mph (345.426 kmp/h)
