Following the success of the British Bike Dirt Day in March 2007 the 2008 Event has expanded to include International Guest & Double World MX Champion Jeff Smith MBE, who will ride in both the Saturday Scramble and the Sunday Trial. On the Saturday evening Jeff will be the keynote speaker at the ‘Legends of Dirt Dinner.’ The Wanganui District Council are funding Jeff’s Trip and some event promotion and event overhead costs. LEGENDS FESTIVAL ENTRY FORMS
Entries are now being accepted for the British Pre 65, Pre 70 and Pre 75 Classes
The first 50 British bikes entered in parade, clubman or expert classes will be accepted. No day entries
(on the database are 83 running British scramblers. Display bikes most welcome).
The guest class of ten Pre 75 European & Japanese up to 250cc machines is by invitation only.

Classic Trials and Twinshock Trials at Matipo Park, numbers are not restricted and entries close Jan 20th.
The events carry full insurance but all entrants must complete an indemnity form, or entry will not be accepted. |

LEGENDS DINNER GUESTS
The first dinner tickets were purchased by 2 Times Australian Trials Champion Bob Walpole from Brisbane who was also the Victorian State MX Champion, also in 1957 and 1958. He spent the 1960-65 period racing MX in Europe and met a few Kiwis along the way. He is coming with his mate Ray Johnson from Timaru NZ MX & Miniature TT Champion. Another Kiwi champion from down south, Paul Doecke is bringing wife Shona to enjoy catching up with many old friends. NZ World Champions Hugh Anderson and Shane King are the Masters of Ceremonies for the evening, with Jeff Smith the International Guest Speaker. The Weekend Event includes;
- Static Display of British Scramble Motorcycles from 1946 to 1980 including; BSA, Triumph, AJS, Matchless, Dot, Francis Barnett, Cotton, Sprite, Rickman Metisse, Royal Enfield, Velocette, Greeves, James, CCM & Cheney.
- Static Display Historic Speedway Taranaki Historic Speedway Society will display a range of early Speedway Solos and three quarter midget cars.
- Gold Star 70 Years Display A guard of honour for Jeff Smith to inspect, judging for Best Awards in all model eras with ‘Jeff Smith Trophy’ for Best awarded at Dinner
- Bonneville Display 50 years of the Triumph Bonneville – Best Awards
- Classic Trial of Pre 1965, Pre 1970 and Twinshock Trials machines in both A and B Grade Classes This covers British, European & Japanese Trials motorcycles. Sunday morning at a venue near Wanganui City . Jeff Smith will give tuition and talk to competitors, and will compete in the trial on a C15 BSA. This event will be held on the Sunday, starting late morning
- Classic Scramble/TT racing and parades on the racecourse infield for classes of British Scramblers and a Guest Class starting at 11am. Jeff Smith will ride a selection of BSA Machines. Hugh Anderson & Shane King will also ride Pre 75 machinery. Grand National Race. Event is limited to 10 guest machines and up to 50 British only.
- Legends of Dirt Dinner The Prizegiving and Dinner at the Infusions Function Centre at the Racecourse with seating for 400 people
- Kiwi VMX Display A display of up to 20 VMX restored European & Japanese bikes from the Pre 86 era assembled by the Wanganui team who run the annual Mr Vintage New Zealand VMX Championships.

Proposed Programme Saturday 22nd Pit Gate Opens 6am, sign in from 7-30 to 9am, Riders briefing 9-30, Jeff Smith arrives at 10am and inspects Gold Star Guard of Honour. 11am Grand Parade of all riders behind Jeff incl novice, clubmans and experts, a round of races followed by lunch break. British Dirt Grand National Experts Invitation race at 2pm. Clubmans Trophy Race at 3pm. Races finish by 4.30pm for track breakdown and cleanup.
Pre Dinner drinks at INFUSIONS Function Centre at the racecourse 6pm. Dinner served at 7pm. Prizegiving from 8.15pm with Jeff Smith after Dinner Speaker, with assistance from New Zealand’s First World Motocross Champion Shayne King and Kiwi World Road Race Champion & multiple NZ MX Champion Hugh Anderson MBE.
Sunday 23rd Observed Trial for Classics and Twin shocks machines at a venue in the Wanganui area, featuring a range of machines and riders from the past. Projected start time will be 11am with Jeff Smith giving a talk to competitors before starting. Jeff is a very active competitor in the North American AHMRA Classic series and came second at the recent Mid-Ohio event in his trial class, and won his over 70 scramble class. Over 40,000 people attended the event to watch the classic motocross and trials. |
